Your largest study expense

Tuition fees depend on the exact programme

University type, study level, programme, duration and facilities all affect the price. Medicine, dentistry, engineering and laboratory-based courses are usually priced differently from business or social-science programmes.

Public universities

Published national guidance gives a broad bachelor's estimate of approximately US$2,500–5,000 per year. The university's current quotation is the final reference.

Private institutions

Published national guidance gives a broad bachelor's estimate of approximately US$6,000–9,500 per year. Professional programmes may cost more.

6% SST

Malaysia applies 6% Sales and Service Tax to tuition fees charged to international students. Check whether every quotation is stated before or after SST.

Do not compare only the headline tuition: ask for a semester-by-semester payment schedule and confirm whether SST, registration, international-student charges and deposits are included.
Costs beyond tuition

University and student-pass charges

These items may be payable before registration, annually, once during the programme or only when a service is used.

Application & registration

Application, registration, international-student, resource or administration charges.

Programme charges

Laboratory, studio, equipment, examination, graduation or professional-body costs where applicable.

Student-pass costs

EMGS processing, insurance, medical screening, immigration, pass, visa and related charges.

Refundable deposits

Institution or accommodation deposits may be refundable, but only under the provider's written conditions.

Visa costs are individual: nationality, pass duration, insurance selection and institution arrangements can change the total. Use the current EMGS calculator and the institution's invoice.
Monthly planning examples

Living costs for an international student

The ranges below are practical planning examples in Malaysian ringgit. Kuala Lumpur and private accommodation can cost more, while campus housing and shared rooms can cost less.

Accommodation

RM600–850 for a simple or shared room, around RM1,000–1,100 for many master rooms, and approximately RM1,200–1,500+ for a basic studio, depending on location and facilities.

Food & groceries

Plan roughly RM600–1,200 depending on cooking, campus meals, restaurants and dietary preferences.

Transport

Plan around RM100–300 when public transport is practical. Ride-hailing and a distant campus can increase the amount.

Mobile & internet

Allow approximately RM30–80 for mobile service, plus home internet if it is not included in the rent.

Utilities

Allow roughly RM50–250 for electricity, water or air-conditioning usage when these are not included.

Personal & study costs

Plan about RM150–500 for printing, materials, toiletries, clothing, recreation and unexpected small expenses.

Shared, careful budget

  • Approximately RM1,500–2,200 per month
  • Shared or lower-cost accommodation
  • Mostly local meals or cooking
  • Regular use of public transport

More private, flexible budget

  • Approximately RM2,300–3,500+ per month
  • Master room, studio or higher-cost location
  • More restaurant meals and ride-hailing
  • More room for personal activities
Planning only: these are not fixed prices or provider quotations. Always check the campus location, current rent, tenancy conditions and your personal lifestyle.

Common questions

Study-cost FAQs

Not always. Confirm SST, application, registration, international-student, programme, visa, insurance and deposit items in writing.

A shared and careful lifestyle may be planned around RM1,500–2,200 monthly, while more private accommodation and flexible spending may require RM2,300–3,500 or more. Your location and habits matter.

Many institutions publish semester or stage payments, but the initial amount and deadlines vary. Follow the institution's official payment schedule.

Some deposits may be refundable subject to written conditions, deductions and clearance. Never assume a payment is refundable unless the provider confirms it in writing.
